What it is.
The Compass is the matching layer of the platform. It takes a bearing on every decision the system is asked to make: which candidate fits which order, which credential to surface next, which exception deserves attention, which placement holds and which one breaks. The Compass does not act; it indicates. The acting belongs to Number One. The verifying belongs to the Operator.
The Compass takes the bearing.
Three roles, in order. The Compass takes the bearing. Number One acts on it. The Operator verifies the heading. Reading the needle is not the same as walking the path; walking the path is not the same as deciding whether the path was right. The system separates the three so each can be audited against the others.
The standing authorization is the field.
A compass needle responds to a field. The field this needle responds to is the standing authorization: the customer’s signed permissions, the candidate’s declared preferences, the regulatory floor for the jurisdiction, the client’s configured rules. When any of those change, the field changes, and the bearing changes with it. There is no hidden parameter.
The rules of fair matching are calibrated against that field. Reason codes accompany every recommendation. Every override is recorded against the actor who made it. Every outcome is reachable from the decision that produced it. The audit trail is not a feature on top of the matching; it is the matching.
The moral source.
The ladder of tzedakah informed the calibration in the first place. The Compass ships with that teaching documented in the rule set as its moral source. Eight rungs ascending from charity given grudgingly to charity given so well the recipient never knows who gave it, with the highest rung above the rest: helping someone toward self-sufficiency, by gift, by loan, by partnership, by work, so they no longer need to receive at all.
The highest rung is the calibration target. Self-sufficiency is what fair matching points toward. The needle does not point at the order with the highest margin or the placement with the lowest friction. It points toward the placement most likely to make the human on the other end of it whole.
Why not Maimonides.
The matching layer was called Maimonides through architecture. The name kept us honest while the shape took form. We retired it because Maimonides is a person, and we hold a hard line against putting persons’ names on the components of our platform. Number One is a rank. Cassion is a substrate. Almanak is a book of days. The matching layer needed a name in the same register.
